Superior Scaffold Services Inc.
When there’s complex façade work on an iconic 17th century building or a multiple phase restoration of a prestigious library in one of the most historic cities in the U.S., Superior Scaffold Services Inc. (Superior Scaffold) is the company entrusted to quickly and effectively implement the framework to begin the process. Since 1952, Superior Scaffold has been the industry leader throughout Philadelphia and the tri-state area in designing and erecting complex scaffolding systems.
“What sets us apart without a doubt is our level of service,” explains Guy Bianchini, CEO of Superior Scaffold. “We react faster and make quicker decisions than our competitors. We pride ourselves in being extremely responsive to our clients’ needs, because that’s the name of the game in this industry.”
A Step above the Rest
Over the course of the last 62 years, Superior Scaffold has been designing and executing scaffolding systems and building a respected reputation as an industry leader along the way. The company also rents, sells, installs and services suspended work platforms, system and frame scaffolding, mast climbing work platforms, sidewalk bridges, rolling towers, shoring, fall protection systems, safety systems, debris chutes, netting and wrap enclosures.
Superior Scaffold was founded originally as Waco Scaffolding of Philadelphia in 1952 by Albert Bianchini. From the beginning, the company has been associated with some of the most prestigious projects in Philadelphia and surrounding areas, from Veterans Stadium to the Ben Franklin Bridge and Independence Hall.
“After selling to the parent company in the 1980s, Albert reformed Superior Scaffold with most of the senior personnel still on board,” recalls Bianchini. “Upon its reinvention in late 1992, the company employed only eight people, all working out of a construction trailer in north Philly.”
Today, Superior Scaffold has 100 employees, serving Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and other parts of the Mid-Atlantic. “Albert is now 88 years old, but he comes in when he can,” reveals Bianchini. “I took over running the company 11 years ago.”
If there’s one thing that hasn’t changed over the last several decades, it’s Superior Scaffold’s commitment to second-to-none customer service. “Meeting and exceeding clients’ needs has always been priority No. 1,” shares Bianchini. “By keeping a smaller, family-run operation, we’re able to service clients quickly and effectively where other corporate giants can’t. We strive to provide cost-effective solutions for individual problems.”
Reaching New Heights in Project Size and Scope
At Superior Scaffold, no job is too large or too small to handle; in fact, the company has delivered complex scaffolding systems for a range of applications, from casinos to historic buildings, the list goes on and on. “We’re one of the city’s most trusted restoration contractors, but we also do a great deal of commercial and industrial work,” details Bianchini. “Right now, we’re doing ongoing work at Philadelphia Energy Solutions, the largest refinery in the city. We’re involved in a $2.5 million shutdown. We see the industrial market really making a comeback.”
But the company really shines when it comes down to the precision and skill needed in a historic restoration. Superior Scaffold was one of the contractors included in the renovation of Independence Hall in Philadelphia. “We were given the prestigious Preservation Alliance Grand Jury award for meeting strict historic criteria,” reveals Bianchini.
Superior Scaffold has been there every step of the way in Princeton University’s comprehensive renovation of the famous Firestone Library. This long-term project will run through multiple phases, taking almost 10 years to finish, during which the library will remain open for normal business hours.
“From college campuses to churches and government buildings, we’re trusted to get the job done, because we come in and we do not leave a mark,” adds Bianchini.
The company is also proud to be providing scaffolding support for Amtrak’s renovation of its 30th Street Station in the heart of Philadelphia. The historic building opened in 1933 and is receiving a much-needed facelift.
Superior Scaffold’s first order of business was to erect canopies and sidewalk protection around the massive building in the middle of the hustle and bustle of a metropolis area. “One thing we do exceptionally well is canopy work,” shares Bianchini. “Not only are they up to code, they always look really nice. You can tell which ones we put up and which ones the competition did. Canopies need to be functional but also fit the décor of the building.”
For the Amtrak renovation, Superior Scaffold has constructed overhead protection at different elevations for buses, cars and pedestrians. “Amtrak even specified the type and color of paint for the canopy… a beautiful soft green,” notes Bianchini. “Customizing the look and color of a canopy is an option that many of our clients choose.”
A Customized Solution
In the end, it’s about a custom-fit solution, because no two buildings or restorations are exactly the same. That’s where Superior Scaffold’s responsiveness comes in, allowing for a painless, efficient construction process from beginning to end.
Superior Scaffold is always looking for new and innovative solutions to scaffolding issues. A prime example is the company’s work with multipoint suspended platforms implemented at the Seneca Niagara Casino (Seneca) in Niagara Falls. Working with an interior the size of two football fields, Superior Scaffold set up multipoint suspended scaffolding stable enough to hold equipment, rolling towers and HVAC piping all situated 40 feet above a complete operational gaming room floor.
“This was something that hadn’t been done on this scale before,” reveals Bianchini. “Other companies came in and submitted proposals using traditional scaffolding or mechanical lifts, but that would have shut down portions of the casino for business. Only Superior Scaffold thought outside of the box, proposing a hanging working platform solution so the casino could remain open the entire time the new duct work and electrical was being installed.”
Superior Scaffold Services Inc. continues to generate forward-thinking solutions that work for each application and individual client, delivering successful restorations for more than 60 years.
