Dimech Services Inc.

A mechanical contracting firm based in Toledo, Ohio

Dimech Services Inc. (Dimech) is a family-owned and -operated mechanical contracting business serving commercial customers in Toledo, Ohio, as well as those within a 50-mile radius of the city.

Established in 1980 by James E. Sheahan, the company has built a legacy over a span of 35 years. Now in its second generation of family ownership, Dimech provides comprehensive plumbing, heating and cooling installation and services to a growing market consisting of health care, education, institutional and commercial customers.

James passed away in 2012, leaving the business to his two sons, Ron and Roger Sheahan. Ron leads the company’s contract and plan and spec side, while Roger leads the HVAC service side of the business.

The brothers employ a mid-sized team, including 30 to 50 field personnel, dependent on season and volume. The company tackles a wide range of projects every day, from simple toilet change outs to multimillion-dollar new construction plumbing and HVAC contracts.

“Our father started this business with virtually nothing in hand, not a single project,” Ron recounts. “We have always worked here based on his principles – on every job, no matter what size, the customer is our priority. We are there to help those customers and to get it done right. Our goal is to be a trustworthy organization to deal with. We try to offer extraordinary service by responding quickly to the needs of our customers.”

Projects of all sizes

Ron and his team have been busy with a wide range of projects, both small and large. The company has been working on major projects for schools, hospitals, manufacturing facilities and others.

“We do a lot of maintenance services for a vast array of customers and we have a 24-hour service department for both the plumbing and HVAC segments of our business,” he explains. “We do a lot of plan and specification work in new construction and renovation work and we have done several projects for the state of Ohio college campuses in northwest Ohio. Things are really strong in the hospital segment of the market. We have been busy in health care with new facilities and renovations of existing hospitals in the area. We are not the biggest mDimech Services Inc.echanical contractor around, but we do cover a vast array of services in the area.”

Dimech is currently in the midst of a plumbing project for a large school in Napoleon, Ohio. The crew is also busy with the second floor renovation of Toledo Hospital, another sizable project, as well as the installation of a large new chiller at the same health care facility. Dimech will soon be staring work on the new Promedica Health and Wellness Center in Sylvania, Ohio, also.  A more unique project is ongoing for First Solar Corp in Perrysburg, Ohio, where the Dimech team is installing HZ tool line for the production of solar panels.

“We are also doing a combination fire station and ambulance district in Hamler, Ohio, which is a little smaller,” Ron says. “Our range incorporates everything from a $3 million hospital job, down to this $120,000 project in Hamler. We cover a whole array of things. No job is too small, but we have also done fairly large projects in town. We installed the plumbing and HVAC on two large dormitories on the Bowling Green State University Campus and also the Huntington Center Arena in recent years and we also did the plumbing in the 200-bed Toledo Correctional Facility for the state of Ohio project.”

Continuing relationships help to keep the business growing. Ron, Roger and the crew have done a lot of work with St. Francis High School. “Over the course of the last few years, we have been trying to get the school totally air conditioned,” he notes. “This project is going on three to five years now and we are into the last phases. We have been working anytime school is out, over summer vacations or during winter and spring breaks. They have done additions and we have incorporated those. This is a very progressive school; they are always making improvements so it seems like we are always up to something over there.”

Staying ahead

The recession was tough on Ron and his team, though through tight management of expenditures and lasting customer relationships, the business made it through. “The hard part was streamlining,” Ron explains. “We always tried to keep a core group and we tried to keep them busy. The economy is showing signs of flourishing, but the market still is not where it was before the downturn.”

Over the next few years, Ron says there are more opportunities coming up for the crew. “We are always up to something,” he says. “There are a few upcoming projects in the area that we are looking at. A lot of medical facilities are in the process of being built and coming out for bid.”

In order to keep up with a changing market, the company focuses on strategic reinvestment. Technology has been a major component of internal improvements in recent years. Dimech is in the process of changing over to new computer software for accounting, which ties into service billings. The new program tracks everything employees enter into it, such as job hours and materials. The technology automatically computes invoices as information comes in, which has led to an increase in billing speed.

Affiliation with the Mechanical Contractors Association helps to keep the crew in the loop as technology, legislation and best practices change. With this powerful resource in the company tool belt, Dimech is well prepared for continued growth. While Ron and Roger are not looking for any major expansion over the coming years, the team will remain focused on a sustainable growth plan. As new opportunities arise, Dimech Services Inc. will continue to build and maintain strong relationships, providing leading plumbing and mechanical services in Ohio and Michigan.
