Marshall Gurley Sr. founded Centurion Construction Company Inc. (Centurion) in 1980 with a simple goal: provide high-quality construction services on time and under budget. For nearly 35 years, the business has maintained these standards. Gurley, still CEO of the business, has built a strong team led by Matt Riggs, president of Centurion, and Gary Wright, executive vice president.

Together, Gurley, Riggs and Wright have established a team with a reputation in the industry for being reliable and honest, allowing the business to grow exponentially since its inception. Centurion employs approximately 100 people devoted to safe and highly efficient performance.

Centurion operates from its location in Raleigh, N.C., with regional offices in Wilmington and Gastonia, N.C. The business serves clients in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia and has gained recognition as a leader in several markets. The team has performed work in a number of sectors, including commercial, institutional, educational, corporate, office and retail. One of the business’ most active markets recently has been multifamily residential construction. Over the last few years, the team has built market-rate apartments, affordable housing and student housing projects.

In August 2013, the team completed work on Carolina Cove, a community for a diverse demographic. The complex has become a popular option for off-campus housing with students at University of North Carolina Wilmington. Carolina Cove is also home to young professionals and retirees looking for an affordable, pleasant place to live.

Carolina Cove offers apartments in 11 buildings. Residents enjoy private, gated entry for safety, as well as a number of high-end amenities at a reasonable cost. Centurion constructed residential buildings, surrounded by an office, a fitness center, a pool and computer lounge, among other recreational facilities.

Centurion has been busy outside of residential work. The company recently started construction on a student housing project in Cullowhee, N.C., which will provide much needed housing for Western Carolina University.

In 2014, the team has also broken ground on one of the largest and most significant student housing mixed-use developments that encompass’ a city block for Taft Family Offices and Jim Ward in Greenville, N.C. Additionally, the team’s work includes a 196-unit project for the Raleigh Housing Authority.

More recently the company began construction on the Historic Loray Mill Loft’s project located in Gastonia, N.C. The former 700,000-square-foot mill is being readapted to provide 196 loft style residential units, as well as 80,000 square feet of commercial space. The historic adaptive re-use project is one of the largest undertakings ever of its kind in the state.

Staying ahead by staying safe

While the team’s dedication to hard work and innovation has landed Centurion hundreds of projects over the years, the firm stands out for one important component of its business structure. Centurion has a nearly unsurpassable safety program. The company’s leadership is dedicated to providing an accident free environment for all employees. Gurley’s largest concern is sending his team home safe every day. All of the company’s superintendents and assistants are required to attend first-aid and CPR safety courses annually, as well as a 10-hour OSHA safety course every two years.

Centurion has been repeatedly recognized for high standards of safety by several organizations, including the Associated General Contractors of America, the National Safety Council and the North Carolina Department of Labor.

Gurley and his team have established a record for performance making Centurion a leader in the Mid-Atlantic construction market.
